Roger J. Sands

Age 78, of Penn Yan, NY reaped his final harvest on July 4, 2023.

Roger was born in Penn Yan, to Maynard and Eleanor Sands.  He graduated from Penn Yan Academy, while working throughout school at Frairy Land Farms.  After graduating, he joined the Air Force, achieving the rank of Airman 1^st Class, serving overseas as an equipment repairman.  After his service, Roger returned home and continued his work as a farm equipment mechanic, while raising livestock and tending vineyards with his family on their small farm.  He worked for Monroe Tractor for 20 years, first as a mechanic and later a salesman.  Then continued to work for Empire Tractor in sales for 20 more years. 

He was a member and past commander of the Penn Yan American Legion Post #355. Roger served the veterans at county level office and funeral honors ritual team volunteer. He was a member of the Moose, Elks, Barrington Rod and Gun Club, Himrod Conservation Club, and Seneca Lake Duck Hunters Club.

He is survived by his sons; Roger James Sands (Anita), and Carl J. Sands (Connie); brother Calvin Sands (Patricia); grandchildren, Ashley Gibson, Meghan (Matthew) Fry, and Cassie Sands; companion Lyn Johnson; former wife and friend Betty Sands; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was predeceased by his parents, and sister Barbara Beyea.

The family will receive friends at the Weldon Funeral Home, 102 E. Main St., Penn Yan on Tuesday (July 11) from 4pm-7pm.  A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday (July 12) at 11:00am; followed by burial and military honors at Branchport Cemetery.  A reception will be announced.
