John Mattison

October 21, 1923 — August 23, 2024

John I. Mattison

Age 100, was welcomed into heaven on August 23, 2024.

John was born on October 21, 1923 in Penn Yan, the son of Marion “Matt” and Alberta (Caswell) Mattison. He served in the US Navy during WWII, from 1941-1943. After he returned home he worked at Corning Glass, Garlock, Town of Benton, and Yates County Highway Department. In his last 20 years of work, he drove a concrete truck for B.R. Dewitt in Penn Yan. Upon his retirement in 1988 he became an avid golfer while also continuing his love of bowling. John loved taking his daily stroll on Route 54A, power walking while smoking his cigar! He was a long time member of the Penn Yan Moose Lodge and a Lifetime Member of the American Legion, where his BV on the rocks awaited him.

John’s loving spirit remains with his surviving family, including his sons Barry and Kevin (Kristine); daughter-in-law Mary Ellen Mattison; grandchildren, Becky (Jeremy) Henries, Aaron Mattison, Sarah (Phil) Vollmer, Matthew (Brittany) Mattison and Kyle Harris; great-grandchildren, Tucker, Douglas, Lillian, Harper, Kendall, Blake, and Wesley, and several nieces and nephews. John also enjoyed spending time with his sister-in-law, Clem Nielsen.

He was received into heaven by his son Douglas John; sisters, Norma, Myra, Marcellee, Eva, and Roby. Also, daughter-in-law Kathi Mattison, former wife Betty Nielsen Mattison and special friend Marian Perry. The family extends a warm and gracious thank you to the staff at Bath VA Community Living Center 3 for their love and care given to John for these past 2 years.

The family will receive friends at the Weldon Funeral Home, 102 E. Main Street in Penn Yan on Thursday (Aug. 29) from 1pm to 3pm; followed by a memorial service at 3:00pm. He will be interred with military honors following the services at City Hill Cemetery.
