John A. Alexander
Age 95, of Bellona Station Road, Penn Yan, passed away November 27, 2024.
The family will receive friends at the Weldon Funeral Home, 102 E. Main St., Penn Yan on Friday (Dec. 6th) from 12pm-2pm; followed by a memorial service at 2pm. A committal service with military honors will be held at Bellona Cemetery at 3pm.
John was born at home in the Town of Benton on April 9, 1929, one of eleven children, to Raymond and Harriett (Jensen) Alexander.
He is survived by his dear wife of 70 years, Carol (Pedersen) Alexander. He is also survived by his two sons, Michael Alexander, and David (Gina) Alexander, all of Penn Yan; brothers and sisters, William “Lee” Alexander of Florida, Lucy Alexander of Penn Yan, James (Darlene) Alexander of Trumansburg, and Linda “Priscilla” Smith of Colorado; sister-in-law, Penny Alexander; two grandchildren, Erin Lee (Tim) Braden of Clifton Springs, and Erik Alden Alexander (Amanda Thomas) of Romulus; five great-grandchildren, Sierra, Cory, Lyrik, Hudson, and Adalee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, May Alexander, Laurine Savage, Ramona “Jeanne” Smith, Alma Miller, Joseph Alexander, and Mary “Carolyn” Coon.
After school, John served in the United States Army from January 1951 to December 1952. Stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, he was Corporal in charge of his Company's motor pool and chauffeured his Company commander. After the army, John enjoyed a long career as a truck driver for several companies, including A.E. Covert, Fitch Oil Company, Penn Yan Express, and Stott and Davis Motor Lines, before retiring in 1991. He also worked as a machinist for Joe’s Engine Rebuilding, owned today by his son.
He was a volunteer and all-around handyman at the Bellona Volunteer Fire Company and was a member of the Bellona International Harvester Tractor Club.
