Jean Lela LeGro

February 3, 1941 — February 2, 2025

Penn Yan

Jean LeGro

Age 83, passed away February 2, 2025. Jean was born on Feb. 3, 1941, in Penn Yan and celebrated her birthday in heaven with her parents, Carmen and Eleanor LeGro, and her twin sister, Jane Smith.

She is predeceased by her parents, Carmen and Eleanor (Clark) LeGro, her twin sister, Jane (Gary) Smith, her daughter, Diane (Allison) Beyersdorfer, and her ex-husband, David Lee Allison. She is survived by her three sons, Patrick (Tonette) Allison, Scott Allison, and Eric Allison; and one daughter, Johnna (James P.) Ingram; two brothers, Jon (Therese) LeGro and James LeGro; brother-in-law, Gary Smith; 14 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a single mother to five children, which was no mean feat, yet her children never went hungry, and always had a back yard to play in.

Her hobbies were reading historical fiction, writing poetry and historical fiction, playing solitaire on her Kindle Fire, and keeping her check book balanced. She loved watching birds, especially hummingbirds, dogs, cats, and her grandchildren (not necessarily in that order).

She lived alone until September 2019 when she moved in with her daughter, Johnna, and family. In December 2022 she became very ill and spent 4 weeks in Strong Memorial Hospital. Upon discharge, she moved to the Homestead Manor Nursing Home where she lived for the rest of her days. Her “ladies,” as she affectionately called the nursing staff at Homestead, cared for her as they would their own mother. She met and held her fourth great grandson, Reuben, whose pictures plastered her bedroom walls, just weeks prior to her home-going.

She will be missed greatly.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Weldon Funeral Home of Penn Yan is assisting the family.
