James Covell

James J. Covell

Age 84, of Penn Yan, NY and Bradenton, FL, passed away peacefully in the home he built, surrounded by his family, on April 3, 2025.

Jim was born in Bath, NY, the son of James J. Covell Sr., and Anna M. (Whitehead) Covell. He honorably served in the US Marine Corps from 1957-1960. "Semper Fi!"

He owned and operated Jim Covell & Son Tree Service for 63 years, before turning it over to his son. He also worked for the Town of Torrey for 20 years as the highway superintendent, he finally retired on January 1, 2002. He and his wife spent their time during their retirement, living in Penn Yan and Bradenton, Florida.

He was a member and former Trustee of the Dresden United Methodist Church. He was also a lifetime member of the Penn Yan Elks and Seneca Lake Duck Hunters Clubs. He was also a member of the Penn Yan Moose, American Legion, and Yates County Highway Association. He was instrumental in helping to form the Penn Yan Volunteer Ambulance Corps and The Outlet Trail.

Jim was predeceased by a daughter, Kimberly Anne Fultz; son-in-law, Frederick M. Fultz, granddaughter, Amanda N. Fultz; and two sisters, Nancy June and Mary Covell. He is survived by his dear and loving wife of 64 years. Ruth I. Covell; son and daughter-in-law, J.J. and Lynne Covell; grandchildren, Amber (Brandon) Hampton, Ashley (Shaun) Drennen, Samantha (Gordon) Barron, and Jessica Covell; great-grandchildren, Shaun, Alexander, Kaydence, Breanne, Emery, Arianna, Kinsley, and Maisie; Cousins Marylee (Joe) Welch, also several nephews and close friends Brian (Amy) Iddings.

The family will receive friends at the Weldon Funeral Home, 102 E. Main St., Penn Yan on Thursday (April 10th) from 4-6PM; and Friday (April 11th) 11AM-12PM. A Funeral Service Celebration will be held at 12 noon at the funeral home; followed by burial and military honors at City Hill Cemetery. A reception to follow at the Moose Club.

Memorial donations in his memory may be made to Keuka Comfort Care, Dresden United Methodist Church, or Friends of the Outlet Trail.
