Dorla Marie Armstrong

Age 93, of Penn Yan, NY, went to eternal rest on Monday, December 5, 2022, after 93 years of life.

Dorla was born on September 12, 1929, in Himrod, NY, to Earl Rice (who passed away when Dorla was 9 years old) and Grace Ellis Rice. She had four siblings, all deceased, Earl (Red) Rice, William (Bill) Rice, Betty Rice Eggelston, and Jesse Rice Vaselllo.

While growing up in Himrod, Dorla attended Dundee Central High School where she was a cheerleader and played violin in the orchestra. After graduating, she took the train into Penn Yan to work at Armstrong Diner, where she met her late husband Paul B. Armstrong Sr.

Dorla was predeceased by her daughter, Jeannie Murdock (Bob); and survived by her two sons, Ben Armstrong (Sharon), and David Armstrong (Lois); and her daughter Kelly Armstrong. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Alyssa, Devin, James, Tony, and Ashley; and two great grandchildren, Madison and Molly.

In Dorla’s younger years she enjoyed bowling in a league, later taking up golf and joining a bridge club. Dorla took great interest in her children’s activities. She attended every sporting and school event and was a Den Mother in Cub Scouts. Dorla loved flowers and gardening and after each harvest of the family garden she would be in the kitchen canning vegetables. After Dorla’s children were older, she worked at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in the medical records and the Secretary for the Township of Milo. Dorla was active in the community and a member of ProAction of Steuben and Yates, Inc., and Seniors of the Loyal Order of Moose. 

The family will receive friends and relatives at the Penn Yan United Methodist Church, 166 Main St. Penn Yan on Saturday (Dec. 10) from 11am-12pm.  A funeral service will be held at the church at 12:00pm; followed by burial at Lakeview Cemetery.  A reception will be announced.

Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the church.
