David was born on June 18, 1939 in Penn Yan, the son of the late Donald and Isabelle Heusler. He graduated from Penn Yan Academy (Class of 1957) and married his childhood sweetheart, Doris Elaine Mashewske. He went on to honorably serve in the United States Navy as an aviation mechanic. They raised their three children in their early years in Virginia Beach before returning to Penn Yan to be with family. David had a lifelong love for the ocean and returned many times on family vacations to the Outer Banks.
Doris sadly passed away just days after her 60th birthday. They were married 41 years. He was also predeceased by their daughter Wendy E. Fingar, sister Joan McLaughlin, and brother Donald “Chubb’ Heusler.
He is survived by his children, Gary R. (Susan) Heusler and Glenda L (Roland) Smith; two sisters, Anne M. Brand, Lillian B. (James) Mattison; son-in-law David Fingar; and three grandchildren, whom he cherished and lovingly called him “Poppy”, Kyle D. Smith, Cori L. Heusler, and Ellyn R. Heusler; several nieces and nephews, and his grand-dog, Jack.
David worked as a machinist and mechanic for Joe’s Engine Rebuilding in Penn Yan for 40 years. He was a Ford lover and loved driving his Mustang. He operated H&H Farms on Anthony Road in the 80’s and 90’s. In his younger years he enjoyed boating and fishing on Seneca Lake. He enjoyed many camping trips with family and friends.
He also was an avid hunter in his younger years. He bought his first motorcycle in his 40’s and enjoyed riding.
He was also an avid golfer in his later years and a member of the Big Oak Golf Course. In addition to his family, he will be missed by many close friends, golf partners and special neighbors.
He was a member of the Seneca Lake Ducks Hunter’s Club, Penn Yan Moose, and Dresden Masonic Lodge.
David played in many golf tournaments to raise awareness and funds to help fight cancer. Contributions to Big Oak Country Club (attention to Dave Sharma) can be made in David’s memory, or please donate to a charity of one’s own choice.
