Cynthia P. Smith

July 3, 1946 — October 2, 2022

Cynthia P. Smith Age 76, of Hammondsport and Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at her home on Keuka Lake. Friends are invited to Weldon Funeral Home, 102 E. Main St., Penn Yan on Thursday (Oct 6) from 12pm-1pm; followed by a funeral service at the funeral home at 1pm. A private burial will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan. Known to all as “Candy”, she was a local icon in Penn Yan. Her father, Rodney Church Pierce, who raced boats for Cutis Martin, taught Candy how to handle a powered watercraft before she was five. She loved the water, maintaining waterfront homes in both Hammondsport and Florida, and even obtaining a Commercial Pilot’s license later in life. Candy led an incredibly active life. She was an avid and fearless hunter, having successfully shot and mounted multiple wild boar and caribou. She was an avid airplane pilot-even owning and flying an aerobatic aircraft, capable of doing barrel rolls, loops, and other stunts! Candy’s husband, Frank, earned an engineering degree at the University of Michigan, and later founded Keuka Construction, a commercial building company. Following the wave of destruction left by Hurricane Agnes in the early 1970’s, Candy and Frank developed multiple subsidized housing projects in Corning and Painted Post New York to restore housing to those in areas devasted by the storm’s flooding. Later in life, Candy developed an important communication tower facility on the hills overlooking Corning. Candy clearly led an active, adventurous, and full life. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and acquaintances. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank W. Smith (1997), and her parents, Rodney and Eleanor (Wren) Pierce. She is survived by longtime friends, William and Lisa Levinson and her long time caregivers/friends, Jennifer (Rob) Lamphier, Conrad Amanda (Wakili) Smith, Woody Tatiana (Jack) Plewa, Lori (Moe) Saltares, and Dawn Smith. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine. (www.vet.cornell.edu/giving) Arrangements entrusted to Weldon Funeral Home, Penn Yan.
