Paul Kubli PENN YAN – Paul Kubli, age 99, passed away on Tuesday (July 3, 2018) at Geneva General Hospital. Friends are invited to calling hours Friday (July 6, 2018) from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the Weldon Funeral Home, 102 East Main Street, Penn Yan. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday at 12 noon at Weldon’s, with Father William Michatek presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Penn Yan Fire Department, Elm Street, Penn Yan, NY 14527 in memory of Paul. Paul was born in Penn Yan at 26 Maiden Lane on March 19, 1919. He was a 1936 graduate of Penn Yan Academy. He was a veteran of World War II. He enlisted in March 1941 and was discharged in August 1945. He was a member of the 43rd Division, 118th Combat Engineers, Company B, and was attached to the 169th Infantry. He fought in campaigns in Guadalcanal, the northern Solomons (New Georgia), New Guinea (Aitape), and the Philippines (Luzon). He was the recipient of the Bronze Star. On August 29, 1952, he married Kathryn Gleavy. They were married for 51 years. He worked as a cabinet maker and architectural draftsman at Walkerbilt Woodworking from 1936 to 1974. He also worked at M&W Products and Penn Yan Boats, retiring in 1984. He was well known for his woodworking skills and craftsmanship, especially on the lathe. He was an active member of the Penn Yan Fire Department for 69 years, serving as chief from 1977 to 1979. He belonged to the Hunter Hook and Ladder Company and was an honorary lifetime member of the Sheldon Hose Company. He was a member of the Penn Yan Fire Department First Aid and Protective Unit. He rarely missed a fire or a meeting, and his dedication to the PYFD is well known throughout the area. He was a life member of the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs and a charter member of the Genesee Valley Chapter of the Society for Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motorized Fire Apparatus in America (SPAAMFAA.) He was also a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Penn Yan Loyal Order of the Moose, and the 43rd Division Veterans Association. He was a member of “Penn Yan’s Dirty Dozen” on the 2013 Honor Flight. He was the Vice President of the Penn Yan Little League in the 1960’s. He was an avid iceboater, boating on Keuka Lake from his teens to his 90’s. Paul was a voracious reader, and possessed a sharp memory and wry entertaining wit. He made a mean Manhattan. He was a devoted husband, father and friend, and he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children Kurt (Chris) of Bristol, NY; Martin of Penn Yan, NY; Bruce of Farmington, NY; and Mary (James Humelsine) of Neptune, NJ; three grandchildren KC (Melissa) Kubli of Boston MA; Kara Kubli of Bristol, NY; Ryan Humelsine of Neptune NJ; and a niece Deb (James) Tifft of Manlius, NY. He was predeceased by his father Godfrey of Switzerland and mother Mary (Jones) Kubli of Ireland; his wife Kathryn, his sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Charles R. Brown, and his brother and sister-law, Gifford and Mary R. Kubli.
